Mike Mattson, Intern
I am excited to be completing my internship for licensed mental health counseling here at New Life. As I train to become a licensed professional counselor, I bring with me not only a passion to get to know you and help you achieve your goals but also fifteen years of counseling experience in the pastoral counseling and human service counseling fields. I am an ordained pastor serving in the same church for the last 15 years and for the last 14 years I have worked as a human service counselor at Easter Seals, UnityPoint, and Eyerly Ball working in supervised community living, residential treatment, and day rehabilitation.
I am currently earning my Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Liberty University while working, pastoring, and raising a family. I have already earned a Bachelor of Science in Pastoral Counseling from Faith Baptist Bible College here in Ankeny and as well as a Master of Arts in Religion from Faith Baptist Theological Seminary.
My aim as your counselor is to meet you where you are, walk alongside you, hear your story, and help you grow. I believe we are all called to examine ourselves and discover what we want our life to be. One of my favorite quotes comes from a disciple of the Apostle John, when he wrote, “The glory of God is man fully alive.” God delights in our flourishing to be people who are fully alive and engaged.
What makes me fully alive is my faith and my family. I am blessed to have a wonderful wife and three sons still at home. They are the center of my world outside of God. I can often be found playing board games or party games and getting together with friends and family. I am a huge sci-fi and fantasy nerd and enjoy history, liturgy, literature, movies, theology, poetry, and music. I see clients of all ages and look forward to working with you.
