Heather Horton, MS, T-LMHC

With more than 15 years of experience in the counseling field, I bring a rich and well‑rounded foundation to my work as a therapist. My path began with undergraduate degrees in Sociology and Social Work, followed by a Master of Science with a certification in School Counseling from Drake University in 2019. While serving as a School Counselor, I felt a growing pull to deepen the support I could offer students and families, which ultimately led me to pursue my Clinical Mental Health license.
As a School Counselor, I have had the privilege of working in private, rural, urban, and suburban school settings, supporting students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Alongside this, my professional background includes counseling youth in a residential treatment facility, supporting adults as a drug and alcohol counselor, and running a technology‑free in‑home daycare for more than six years. This experience strengthened my belief in the importance of limiting technology at a young age to support social and emotional development in early childhood. Together, these roles have given me a comprehensive understanding of the diverse pressures young people face across different environments and stages of development.
My passion lies in helping youth and young adults navigate the pressures of today’s world. As a former college athlete, I understand the intensity of sports performance anxiety, as well as the academic pressure, perfectionism, and constant balancing act many students face. I am also deeply committed to supporting teens and young adults as they transition out of high school and into the next chapter of their lives—a stage filled with identity shifts, growing independence, uncertainty, and the fast pace of an ever‑changing world. Using a cognitive‑behavioral approach paired with mindfulness strategies, I help individuals build emotional regulation skills, understand their reactions, and develop confidence in handling life’s demands, while also partnering closely with parents who are supporting their children through these challenges.
Rooted in my own upbringing on an acreage, I now live in the countryside with my husband, daughter, and two dogs. I currently serve full-time as a School Counselor at Southview Middle School. Outside of work, I enjoy time with my family, being outdoors, gardening, and cheering on our daughter at her events.
I look forward to working with you and walking alongside you as you navigate both the pressures and possibilities of today’s world.
