Candace Shultz, LMSW

“When life gives you lemons…” It’s a phrase we’ve all heard before, but sometimes life really does throw us some tough situations. As a therapist, I understand how challenging it can be to navigate those moments, and my approach is grounded in empathy, comfort, and a deep belief that each individual has their own unique journey to walk. My goal is to come alongside you in this process, offering support, understanding, and tools to help you find healing and achieve your goals.

I grew up surrounded by the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, where I learned early on that life’s struggles are often softened by a strong sense of community, faith, and the grace of God. It was there that my love for people, my commitment to serving others, and my faith in Jesus Christ first took root. As a therapist, I bring that same heart of service and love to my practice, trusting that the God who created us also equips us with the strength and resilience to face life’s difficulties.

I received my MSW from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and earned a certificate in Collective Trauma. My work has taken me across the spectrum of ages and experiences, from childhood to adulthood, with a recent focus on working with the Alaska National Guard and the VA. My approach integrates Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), along with other therapeutic methods, always tailored to meet my clients’ needs. I’m also deeply passionate about the gut-brain connection and the ways our physical health directly impacts our mental well-being.

My husband, daughters, and three dogs recently made the move from Alaska to Iowa—people often ask how a family moves from the rugged landscapes of Alaska to the Midwest, and the answer is simple: we’re a military family! I have a special place in my heart for working with military families, veterans, and service members because I understand firsthand the unique challenges they face.

In my free time, I love to cook meals for my family, tend to my garden, craft, read, and travel. Most of all, I enjoy connecting with others and sharing in life’s joys and struggles, always with a heart of gratitude for the love and grace of Jesus Christ.
