Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been clinically proven to be very effective in treating a wide range of emotional disorders, including anxiety, depression, and addictive behaviors among many others. It is one of the most widely practiced approaches in mental health counseling. It can also be employed in a self-help type of platform where people work on emotional issues without engaging in formal working sessions with a therapist. Just about everyone can benefit from moving their thoughts away from automatic reactions and transitioning to a more mindful approach to everyday life, focusing on being present in the moment.

Being “mindful” of how our current thoughts are generated and how they might be distorting our view of the world around us is a key element in managing those thoughts in a more effective way. When we take the time to “think about our thoughts” we discover that there could be a better, more productive way to deal with whatever situation in which we find ourselves. Our behaviors change, and so do the consequences of those behaviors. Mindfulness on its own has been proven to help manage stress, anxiety, and depression.

This class will introduce the participants to the fundamental principles and techniques behind
CBT and enable them to determine whether some of those techniques might work for them. There will be lectures in each class going over those basics and providing a connection between CBT and mindfulness-based exercises that tie into CBT theory, helping the participants manage stress and anxiety in their daily lives. The classes will include short lectures with handouts followed by segments where the principles can be tried out in practice.
