Ryan McDonald

I believe no one should feel as though they are facing life’s challenges alone.  Through the many different struggles along the journey, our foundational connections and relationships are key to navigating with peace and understanding.  As a therapist, my goals are to assist clients in strengthening those foundational beliefs and relationships, re-establish hope, and achieve personal success.  I strive to create a dynamic that is both supportive and safe, allowing individuals to feel listened to while free from judgment, working together to find insight and perspective that will contribute to empowerment and growth.

My journey as a therapist began at Adult and Teen Challenge of the Midlands in Colfax, IA, a long-term, faith-based program for men and women with life controlling struggles and addictions.  While on staff there, I developed a passion for those walking through times of doubt and fear, connecting with both individuals and families, and helping clients bridge the gap between the Bible and life application.  Scripture tells us in Deuteronomy 31:8 that God will never leave us nor forsake us, and that there is grace for all who are willing to receive.  In addition to seeing clients through New Life, I also continue to work in partnership with Adult & Teen Challenge, supporting the individuals choosing to make that life change.

I received my undergraduate degree in English-RPC from Iowa State University and am currently finalizing my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling through Southern New Hampshire University.  As a therapist, I primarily utilize Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, working with individuals to develop their ability to strengthen and reinforce their core values and beliefs, eliminate obstacles and translate those principles to their everyday lives.  While I am excited to work with all clients who are seeking growth and healing, I do have a passion for working with individuals and their support who are seeking freedom from addictions and/or substance use.

Prior to my career in counseling, I spent many years in corporate retail working alongside the film industry, so I have a great passion for movies.  I’m an avid golfer and enjoy all types of music.  My wife, Aimee, and I live in Des Moines and have three children.  We attend Christian Life church in Des Moines, where I also serve in media production and as one of the drummers on the worship team.
